Costa Calma (Sotavento) is a quiet coastal town/resort located about 80 kms south of the airport in Fuerteventura. The South is quieter than the north with less tourism thanks to restricted development. The pristine white sandy beaches and dunes on the Jandia peninsular rival some of the worlds finest.

Sotavento located on the outskirts of Costa Calma is considered as one of Europes best and most consistent kitesurfing spots and in summer it hosts the annual Professional Kitesurfing World Cup. The warm climate, consistent wind and variety of conditions make it a great all year round kitesurf destination. The trade winds blow from as early as March through to Sept, summer is the prime season however thanks in part to the spot being located in a wind acceleration zone there is sufficient wind to run courses all year round.

As well as the long expansive beach the spot also benefits from having a large 3km shallow lagoon which provides ideal conditions for intermediates. Our intermediate kitesurf program is aimed at people who have completed a beginner kite course and now want to progress and cover the water work side of things from body dragging onwards. Our aim is to help you perfect the water start, getting up on the board and riding in a controlled manner. Everything you need to become a self sufficent kitesurfer.

These compact and bijou one bedroom apartments are located on a small quiet development in the heart of Costa Calma and are only a stones throw away from the beach, main shops, tapas bars and restaurants. They are ideal for two friends or a couple looking for comfortable, affordable holiday accommodation. Each apartment has a twin bedroom, shower room and open plan living area and kitchenette. All of the apartments have a small balcony or terrace which has a patio table and chairs.

1 BEDROOM APARTMENTS/BUNGALOWS (Las Palomas & Gaviotas)
These spacious one bedroom apartments or bungalows are located on a quiet 3 star tourist development in the heart of Costa Calma and are only a stones throw away from the beach, main shops, tapas bars and restaurants. These apartments and bungalows comprise of a large open plan lounge and kitchen area and a full family bathroom. The sofa converts into a bed which is suitable for a child. The apartments and bungalows all have a twin bedroom with built-in wardrobes. Both have large sunbathing terraces which have sunloungers and patio furniture.

The development has two beautiful swimming pools, both of which are surrounded by sunbathing terraces, parasols and sunbeds. The main pool is acclimatized to around 23 degrees. There is also a small children´s pool which is only 50cm in depth. There is a Pool Bar offering snacks and refreshments plus an onsite Reception with internet access.

KITESURF SCHOOL & KITESURF LESSONS

The Kitesurf Centre was opened around 10 years ago and since then Sotavento has earned a reputation as being the perfect spot for kitesurfers and every year hosts the annual Kitesurf World Cup.

The Kitesurf School is an official IKO and VDWS accredited kitesurf centre and the coaching program has been developed according to the their guidelines. The aim is for students to become safe, responsible and self-sufficient kitesurfers.

The Kitesurf Instructors are qualified via the International Kiteboarding Organisation (or VDWS equivalent) and all have the necessary skills and patience to help you progress in a safe but fun enviroment at your own pace. For safety reasons and to ensure you get the attention you need on dry land and in the water, the kitesurf Lessons have a low student to instructor ratio. All students are placed with an instructor who specialize in teaching at a particular level.

The wind is predominantly cross-offshore and the kiteboarding spot forms part of a long stretch of fine white sandy beach. Sotavento lies directly in a wind accelaration zone and as such it’s the islands most consistently windy place. All courses are run in either the large 3km shallow lagoon or in open water with jet ski/boat assistance which is ideal for beginners or intermediates. For your safety the centre also operates a permanent beach surveillance and inshore rescue system.

The beachfront centre located on the edge of the lagoon lagoon has a good range of facilities including, air pressure system to inflate kites, freshwater showers, snack bar, wifi and WC etc.

All the equipment used by the Kitesurf School is provided by leading kitesurf brand CABRINHA and the equipment used for the courses is specifically designed for beginners and intermediates with ease of use, progression and safety being the key factors.

Our Intermediate Kitesurf program aimed at people who have covered all the steps on IKO level 1 (including body drag & relaunch) and are working through the steps on IKO level 2. It offers a refresher of the last steps of IKO level 1 and covers the most important steps on IKO level 2 including: body dragging (unhooked & hooked), using kite traction, body positioning for the water start, kite and power control, board and edging techniques, staying upwind.

After the course you can practice what you have just been taught under the safety and guidance of of an instructor. Each day an instructor helps a group of a maximum of 4 kitesurfers improve their level in the kitesurf zone next to the kite centre. The instructor is on hand to help you launch and land your kite, offer you hints and tips and for your safety the area is controlled by a team on jet skis. The sessions are run in 3 hour blocks and are scheduled upon arrival.

As with most boardsports we all have our own learning curves and progress at different rates. So depending upon your ability, aptitude to learn, fitness, stamina and the kitesurf conditions you may cover some or all of the topics outlined above.

At the end of the course, students have the option to take the VDWS exam and get the VDWS kiteboarding license. (arranged and paid for locally). This can then be used to further your instruction or rent equipment at any recognised VDWS centre
