KITESURFING HOLIDAYS IN KWAZULU-NATAL, SOUTH AFRICA

THE KINGDOM OF THE ZULU

Known as the Kingdom of the Zulu, the province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) is a melting pot of African, European and Indian cultures and is a kitesurfer's paradise.

Durban is situated on the East Coast of South Africa and enjoys a warm sub-tropical climate year-round with temperatures in the mid to low twenties even in winter. With 320 days of sunshine a year.

Durban is a well-established surfing destination but recently has been receiving the attention it deserves from kiteboarders. Durban has some of the best kitesurfing locations in South Africa and almost all these locations offer great surf conditions as well. The windy season usually lasts from from September through to March but there is fairly consistent wind the whole year.

While Durban offers excellent and safe kitesurfing beaches the North and south coasts offer epic un-crowded conditions with good point breaks that work in winds from NE through to SW.

THE SPOTS

The coast of the KwaZulu-Natal is a kitesurfer's paradise. There are kitesurf spots everywhere and the north and south coasts offer plenty of uncrowded spots. Durban's main kitesurfing venue is, the aptly named. Kitebeach, located about 3 km from the city center. The location offers good consistent surf year round and good wave riding conditions. The beach is wide enough even at high tide to have plenty of space for launching and landing on the beach.

The water temperature is warm all year round, so the most you are going to need is a spring suit. On hot days in summer and winter you will be quite comfortable kitesurfing in boardshorts.

WHY KWAZULU-NATAL?

One of the big attractions of kitesurfing in the Kingdom of the Zulu is uncrowded north and south coast beaches, the warm water and year round sunshine. The wind is very consistent from September through to March and there are great wave riding spots available.

The roads are excellent along most of the coast, so access to the water is easy. However the coast from northern Zululand right up to the Mozambique border is wild with few access points. Large sections of the Zululand coast are protected marine reserves. There are kitable spots everywhere, most of which have never been kitesurfed (be careful though always check with your guide before heading out) – KwaZulu-Natal is THE place for a kitesurfing adventure.

WHAT'S ON OFFER?

We run Zoco kitesurfaris for advanced to experienced kitesurfers along the entire KwaZulu-Natal coastline with Durban as a starting and end point and another up the south African coast up into Mozambique kiting all the spots along the way. We also offer Kitesurfing Accommodation at an excellent spot in Vulamanzi/Kelso.

If you are an advanced or experienced kitesurfer looking for more something a little different, something wild and adventurous then maximise your time in the water by joining one of our kitesurfaris. We offer 2 kitesurfaris in this area: The KwaZulu-Natal or 'Zululand' Kitesurfari and the Durban to Mozambique kitesurfari. Our local Guides will give you a safe introduction to the more challenging, lesser known and uncrowded breaks in these areas. Whatever your preference, wave riding or flat water you'll get your fill with our local guides.

Kitesurfing Accommodation in Kelso/Vulamanzi. This is a great base for people who want to be close to the action and kite uncrowded spots. Kelso is 65km South of Durban and offers excellent conditions in both the NE'erly and SW'erly winds. Happies is a perfect point break in the Sw'erly winds and offers 2 locations the first being in the NE in front of the caravan park and the more advanced spot is the point itself. The point provides some of the best and longest waves around, and it you get it on a good swell and a clean SW you are in for a treat! The beach is a beginner-expert location while the point is strictly Experts only.

Our custom kitesurfing holidays offer you the chance to kitesurf the KwaZulu-Natal coast on your own. We can arrange anything from your kitesurfing accommodation, car hire and kitesurfing lessons to personal kitesurf guides or equipment hire.
